Question 1

What's the difference between SUMIF and SUMIFS?

Accepted Answer

SUMIF handles one condition and puts the sum range last. SUMIFS handles one or more conditions and puts the sum range first. I use SUMIFS for everything so I only have to remember one argument order.

Question 2

Why is my SUMIFS returning 0?

Accepted Answer

The usual causes are dates or numbers stored as text, a comparison sign typed inside the cell reference (like ">=B1"), or a category that doesn't match exactly because of an extra space. Check the dates first.

Question 3

Can SUMIFS use OR logic, like Coffee beans or Milk?

Accepted Answer

Not directly, because every condition must be true. Wrap it in SUM with a list of values instead: =SUM(SUMIFS(Invoices!G:G, Invoices!D:D, {"Coffee beans","Milk"})).

Question 4

Does SUMIFS work in Google Sheets?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The formulas in this article, including EDATE, work in Google Sheets exactly as written.

Question 5

Is it okay to use whole columns like G:G in SUMIFS?

Accepted Answer

Yes. SUMIFS only looks at the used part of the sheet, so whole-column references are fine and pick up new rows automatically. Just make sure every range in the formula is the same size.
